Named after the Greek poetess Sappho, who lived over two millennia ago on the Greek island of Lesbos, Planet Sappho is a site devoted to helping lesbian, bi-curious and bisexual women meet other female singles online, for dating, friendship, relationships and everything in between. The site operates in the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Ireland, so even though it doesn't span the globe like other dating sites, there's still a good chance you can meet the perfect person online with Planet Sappho. The site certainly has a number of great features and an increased number of members makes it more likely you’ll find a date, however it comes with a fairly substantial price tag so may not be for everyone.

With the major negative aspect out of the way, we do have to say that we were impressed by the look and feel of the site, and just how easy it was to create and edit a profile on the site. Users simply take a 2 minutes questionnaire to give their basic credentials, and then can return at any stage to edit their profile and add more information. You can specify your desired appearance, personality, lifestyle and more, and you can include a lot of information about yourself, such as indicating your style (femme, butch, lipstick lesbian, sporty and more). Naturally, as with all dating sites, the more information hosted on a profile, the more likely other users are to get in contact, but adding extra information never seemed like a chore as the site was such a dream to use. What's more, the pictures hosted on profiles on the site were of great quality, and shown prominently on every page. Unlike other sites, users can upload as many photos of themselves as they like! Planet Sappho also has a great search function that allows users to search by a number of customizable criteria in order to return the most specific results. The site establishes that it is keen to build a safe environment for women, although we would like to have seen a few extra measures to guarantee that its members are women, such as a Facebook test (which checks your status to make sure you are who you say you are) or more systems to make sure you’re a real human and not simply a bot signing up. That said, the profiles we viewed seemed to be genuine, so perhaps we shouldn’t worry too much!

The site hosts a very detailed search function with a lot of options so you can really narrow down the details and find a woman who might suit you. Alternatively you can simply browse the site or click on new members. You will also be able to view who is online whilst you are, which is a good system for finding women and chatting to them instantly without having to wait for members to log in. If you don’t mind the wait, however, Sappho offers an internal messaging system which allows users to read and respond to messages in their own time. Additionally, you can flirt with fun tools that send winks to show you’re keen. A more unique feature is the “date cast” option, which allows you to send a quick message to everyone in your search results, really saving you time if you want to get in touch with a lot of members at once. That said, it is a little impersonal, but will probably increase your chances of getting a response.

We found Sappho easy to use and navigate, and generally well designed. It is easy to edit your profile at any time so that it is kept up to date, and the communications systems work well to let you chat whilst you look around the site. Although it’s a bit pricy we do recommend taking a look around the site, opening a free account and performing a search or two. You can also pay for a trial version which allows full access for a limited period so that you can get a better idea as to whether or not the site is suitable for you.
