Powered by Pink Sofa, Dating The L-Life is one of the most visited lesbian dating sites in operation on the internet today. Unfortunately it’s the uglier little sister of Pink Sofa, offering a slightly slimmer range of features and without the face lift that Pink Sofa recently received. As such it suffers slightly from drab colouring and a less user-friendly interface. However, compared with a good many other lesbian dating sites around, it’s still a top player.

Dating The L-Life provides single women with the opportunity to hook up with other lesbian singles and couples across the world using a range of online facilities. Whilst Dating The L-Life does offer a free trial option for new members (who can check out everything the site has to offer before they commit to a particular duration of subscription membership) this free trial only lasts for three days, meaning all data is lost from the user's profile (including any connections made with other members) if the user decides not to upgrade to premium membership. We found this a little disappointing given that most of the other sites we have reviewed in this category (and indeed, in others) have offered a limited-access free trial for an infinite period of time. The one up-side to free membership with Dating The L-Life is that it offers complete access to all site features, so even though the membership offered is brief, you can get a good feel for how the site would work if you were a subscription member.

Designing your own profile on Dating The L-Life is straightforward.  It's fairly simple to create a basic profile, filling in a couple of descriptive sections, uploading a picture and selecting some multiple-choice options from a provided list. Truthfully though, we found that the profiles on the site were less informative because there didn't seem to be a great deal of opportunity to personalize them. When browsing through the profiles listed on Dating The L-Life it is impossible to distinguish one profile from another without reading the in-depth descriptive sections, and we thought this might be a disadvantage for users on the site (especially if you're new to online dating). Similarly, there is a good complement of predetermined search functions on the site (such as 'Online Now' or 'New Grrls') but little opportunity to perform an advanced, customized search. With other sites in this category offering users the opportunity to search by more than 30 different search criteria, and filter results on the basis of customizable preferences, the 'easy search' on Dating The L-Life doesn't really put up much competition. However, if you do choose to use more advanced search options then you can even the odds a little.

That said, if you do manage to find someone to chat to on the site, there are a number of ways members can chat to each other using Dating The L-Life. Members can chat live using the instant messaging service, which, though it isn't the slickest we have come across, is perfectly functional. You can also choose whether or not you wish to appear online, meaning that you can browse the site at your own leisure, uninterrupted, or opt to show other users that you’re up for a chat.

As seems to be standard in this category, there's also an in-site email client which allows members to contact each other personally, without revealing any personal information. One of the most impressive features of the site, and something that certainly adds value, is the availability of video and audio messaging within the email client. Users can send personal video or voice messages to each other through the email client in the same way as they would send a regular email. Whilst it's disappointing that this does not allow users to leave a prerecorded video or audio 'greeting' on their profiles, it's still pretty exciting stuff. Finally, users can get to know each other using the particularly active chatrooms, where everything from politics to cookery is discussed. Whilst it's a shame the site doesn't host other community features, such as blogs or forums, the chatroom is reassuringly popular.

Whilst users of Dating The L-Life are bound to have a pretty good experience, making use of the available features and encountering the enthusiastic membership base, we're not sure we agree with the $10 minimum a month price tag, which seems a little steep, particularly given that the site simply isn’t as good as its bigger sister, Pink Sofa. Similarly, we're not entirely sure that the 3-day free membership option is long enough to properly get to know the site and decide whether you wish to commit to a subscription. However, there is a gift option, which means that this could make a nice present for a friend or family member, particularly since they will gain access to Pink Sofa using their account log in details.
